Use of Open Source GIS in local authorities. New article by Paul Taylor and Gina Cavan (UNIGIS) in GeoConnexion

A recent survey of local authority members of the Public Sector Mapping Agreement highlights considerable efforts to implement Open Source solutions. Over half of the local authorities that completed the survey use Open Source GIS software, citing economic reasons as a key motivation, and reported a variety of benefits and challenges. There is a high level of interest in Open Source technology by those who have not yet used the software. However, a variety of concerns such as lack of skills and support need to be addressed if Open Source GIS is to enjoy increased uptake within local authorities.
